Related Societies

On 28 May 2010 the Amsterdam Centre for Eastern Orthodox Theology (ACEOT) was established. Prof. Wim Janse, dean of the Faculty of Theology, and Prof. Masha Antokolskaia, president of the Dutch Foundation for Eastern Orthodox Theology, Spirituality and Praxis signed a letter of intent to this effect. Director of ACEOT is Dr. Michael Bakker.

The central purpose of the American Society of Church History (ASCH), founded in 1888, is the scholarly study of the history of Christianity and its relationship to surrounding cultures in all periods, locations and contexts. Through publications, conferences, awards, research support, and other means, the Society encourages the study of the Christian church and faith, its figures and movements, in institutional and non-institutional settings. We welcome scholars and practitioners of all backgrounds who employ traditional or newly developing methods, disciplines, and approaches to the study of religion. The ASCH cooperates closely with the American Historical Association and other scholarly societies and organizations in joint annual meetings.

The Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (ASEEES), a nonprofit, non-political, scholarly society, is the leading private organization in the world dedicated to the advancement of knowledge about the former Soviet Union (including Eurasia) and Eastern and Central Europe.

The American Society for Legal History is a nonprofit membership organization dedicated to fostering scholarship, teaching, and study concerning the law and institutions of all legal systems, both Anglo-American and those that do not operate in the Anglo-American tradition. Founded in 1956, the Society sponsors the Law and History Review and Studies in Legal History, a series of book-length monographs available to ASLH members at substantial pre-publication discounts.

The Byzantine Studies Association of North America, Inc. (BSANA) was formed in 2006.  It is composed of three parts:  the U.S. National Committee for Byzantine Studies (USNCBS), the Canadian Committee of Byzantinists (CCB), and the Byzantine Studies Conference (BSC).

Canadian Society of Biblical Studies

The Canadian Society of Biblical Studies (CSBS) is the oldest humanities academic society in Canada. The Society provides a meeting place for those interested in all aspects of the academic study of the Bible—Hebrew Bible, Septuagint, New Testament—in its literary and historical context. Many of our members work, for example, in the Ancient Near East, post-biblical Judaism, Hellenistic religion and philosophy, archaeology, and Christian origins beyond the New Testament. Our annual meeting occurs in late May or early June, in conjunction with the Congress of Canadian learned societies sponsored by the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences (CFHSS). Members of the Society receive the journal Studies in Religion / Sciences Religieuses, which offers a refereed publication outlet for articles in our fields of study. In addition, Wilfrid Laurier University Press publishes Studies in Christianity and Judaism, a special series devoted to Canadian monographs in early Judaism and Christian origins. The Society annually awards five Awards/Prizes: two for student essays and three for publication and research in our fields of study.

The purpose of the CTSA, within the context of the Roman Catholic tradition, shall be to promote studies and research in theology, to relate theological science to current problems, and to foster a more effective theological education, by providing a forum for an exchange of views among theologians and with scholars in other disciplines.

The European Association of the Study of Religions promotes the academic study of religions through the international collaboration of scholars in Europe whose research has a bearing on the subject. 

The objective of the EASR is pursued by the usual means of scholarly activity such as the arrangement of conferences, symposia or colloquia, the encouragement of scholarly publications, the exchange of information through electronic or other means, and  other activities.

The International Association of Orthodox Dogmatic Theologians (IAODT)  is a community of professors, scholars and  institutions involved in the study and teaching Orthodox Dogmatic theology. It  aims at promoting research in Dogmatic Theology at the international level in  the spirit of Orthodox  Church Tradition, and elaborating the practical dimension of Dogmatic Theology, exploring its implications both for the internal life of the Church as well as for her mission to the world.

Muhlenberg College has established the Institute for Jewish-Christian Understanding as an expression of its commitment to interfaith relations. The IJCU uses the resources of the academic community to foster such research and dialogue and to build bridges of understanding between the faith traditions.

The North American Academy of Liturgy (NAAL) is an ecumenical and inter-religious association of liturgical scholars who collaborate in research concerning public worship. NAAL meets annually in early January in cities throughout the United States and Canada. The academy’s more than twenty seminars provide the locus of our work and the heart of our meetings.

OCAMPR exists to foster interdisciplinary dialogue and promote Christian fellowship among healing professionals in medicine, psychology and religion. Members pursue an understanding of the whole person which integrates the basic assumptions of medicine, psychology and religion within the Orthodox Christian faith in educating and serving Church and community.

Orthodox Theological Society in America

Founded in 1880, the Society of Biblical Literature is the oldest and largest learned society devoted to the critical investigation of the Bible from a variety of academic disciplines. As an international organization, the Society offers its members opportunities for mutual support, intellectual growth, and professional development.

The Society for the Law of the Eastern Churches was established according to Austrian Law at the end of the 1960s. The organisational centre of the Society is the Department for Legal Philosophy, Law of Religion and Culture (former Institute for Canon Law) of the Viennese Faculty of Law. The purpose of the Society is the promotion of better international and inter-confessional scholarly collaboration among specialists of the Law of the Eastern Churches and of the Civil Law on Churches insofar as it concerns the Eastern Churches.

The Society for Orthodox Christian History in the Americas (SOCHA) exists to promote the study of the history of the Orthodox Christian Church in the New World; to collect source materials and make them available to researchers and scholars; to disseminate historical information to the public; and to encourage networking among those engaged in the study of American Orthodox history. SOCHA is particularly dedicated to this study based on the examination of primary sources with integrity and clarity.

SOCNA will promote research between Orthodox Christian Theology and the sciences, and will make the Orthodox Church in North America a more active and visible part of the larger religion and science dialogue, first in North America and Canada, and then worldwide. In this project we will investigate the Orthodox relationship and reaction to the sciences but will engage the larger historical and geographical dimensions of the Orthodox world.

The Society for the Study of Christian Spirituality (SSCS) exists to promote research and dialogue within the growing community of persons interested in the field of spirituality. The SSCS is ecumenical and strives to be inclusive of the widest possible range of expressions of Christian spirituality. Its work is interdisciplinary, encouraging the application of diverse critical approaches to the study of spirituality.
